Mary Jane Conly was one of the several children of James Conly, headmaster of the Bell Street State School, Preston, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. She married John Jarrett (1872-1934) in 1900, who became her manager during a busy career, eight years of which (1902-1910) she spent in the United Kingdom. Madame Conly was closely associated with the Melbourne Philharmonic Society.
